Davie Bryce's Calton Athletic

Davie Bryce's Calton Athletic is a documentary by Jonnie Lewis and Euan Myles about the Scottish abstinence-based recovery group whose members acted as a source of inspiration for the Trainspotting films.

Calton Athletic Recovery Group has been helping individuals recover from drug and alcohol addiction through their unique abstinence based programme since 1985. Their main aim is to provide support through weekly recovery meetings, as well as various physical activities, both of of which they believe integral to achieve and sustain long term recovery.

Calton Athletic Recovery Group is a registered charity that is solely reliant on self-generated funds at present. They are currently providing a limited service on a voluntary capacity from rented premises in the East End of Glasgow.

This film features as an extra on the Trainspotting 2 DVD release.

Widdershins

Widdershins is Scotland's very first steampunk animation. This fast paced BAFTA award-winning short, by writer, director and animator Simon P. Biggs, blends science fiction and Victorian period drama to explore the consequences of automation and artificial intelligence on our lives.

This parallel world is brought to life in an illustrative black and white style, and features the voice talent of award winning actor Brian Cox (Succession, Manhunter, X-Men 2).

Funded by the Scottish Film Talent Network in partnership with Screen Scotland and BFI Network, Widdershins premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in the summer of 2018, and has since screened at over sixty film festivals around the world, and has received ten awards, including a BAFTA Scotland award for Best Animation.

Around The Block

'Around the Block' is a passion project by Jonnie Lewis that focuses on American street artist David Zinn, famous for his heart-warming street drawings, composed of chalk, charcoal and found objects.

I began work on it through my own sense of creative frustration, with the loose idea being 'I want to go and make a film about a street artist'.

But when it came to editing it, it felt more apt for it to become an analogy for what it's like to be involved in the creative process that perhaps anyone in a creative industry can identify with.

Much like David finds inspiration in the cracks, streaks and specks on the pavement, I personally find that getting out and finding shots with a camera in my hand is far more fluid and inspiring than sitting at home and trying to come up with ideas.

The final piece is no longer a film specifically about street art, but a study of the process involved in making ideas come to life - told through a tour of David's world alongside the characters that live within it.

If nothing else, hopefully it encourages someone else to go out and create something just... because.

Voices on the Road

Deep in the remote Peruvian Amazon a road is quietly destroying a protected rainforest, causing conflict and fear. But for some indigenous communities, desperate for change, it also brings hope.

The road is cutting through a UNESCO World Heritage Site - the Manu Biosphere Reserve - and opening it up to the outside world.

The Moments In Between

Ever since Mike Guest first took a camera into water he has been transfixed, mesmerised and spellbound by the skin of the ocean, where liquid meets air. Each of us has a unique relationship with the ocean. Some fear it, some play with it, it keeps us fit, it soothes our minds, and it's part of the lungs and lifeblood of this planet. It's also one of the largest potential sources of clean energy.

Thanks to Orbital Marine Power for allowing us cut this piece together from a trip filming the ground-breaking work they are carrying out in tidal energy.

The film came about from editor Robbie saying how he just kept getting lost in the same small moments just above and bellow the surface of thew water. Mike reached out to pianist Jennifer Austin and musician David Jack and soon The Moments In Between was born.

Loch Duart

‘Born and Raised’ is the first in a series of 4 films by Great Brink which focusses on the values upon which Loch Duart was founded. The film gives you a glimpse of the farm teams who live and work in the communities of the Outer Hebrides where we raise our world-renowned salmon.

This job had a small and nibble crew which allowed us to work quickly as well as having the ability to change plans last minute due to weather and operational changes with boats and such like out at the pens.

The title ‘Born and Raised’ refers to both the people who have lived and worked in the Outer Hebrides and Sutherland for generations and to Loch Duart’s unique lineage of salmon which can be traced back to the wild salmon which have been swimming in Scottish waters for millennia.

In the film Ruairidh Macleod, Assistant Site Manager at Loch Duart, explains just how intrinsically linked Loch Duart salmon is to the local community and to the environment in which he lives and works.

Etch

A girl hikes across remote moorland. On a hill in the distance, stands a lone building, which she discovers is a long abandoned school hall. A little sun penetrates the dirty glass. An upright piano sits in the far corner. She takes off her muddy boots and with confidence in her gait, strides across to the piano and pulls it by one corner. The rusted wheels are jammed and it pivots, creating an arc. A line is carved in layers of compacted dust and the ancient wooden floor splinters with the weight of the instrument.

In the centre of the room, hinged on one foot, she extends her leg and rotates swiftly and with graceful power. Her feet trace, etch and carve in circular movements, creating marks in the layers of dirt. Her body contorts. She throws herself in controlled but frenetic choreography. The movements increase in size and vigour as a pattern emerges. Finally she stands back to witness the impression her dance has etched on the floor.

Jura: Deer Island

Jura is an Island off the west coast of Scotland where deer outnumber humans by 40:1. This film is in fond memory of Peter Campbell who sadly passed away earlier this year. No one knew Jura and its deer better than him. And although very ill at the time he gave his incredible knowledge and wonderful voice to the film.

Scotland Is Now

Directed by Lewis Gourlay for Eyebolls, this spot for ‘Scotland Is Now’ was created to highlight Scottish innovation in everyday life. The agency brief was to make ‘moments in time’ - freeze framing the action to highlight the various inventions. The creative response was to use a high speed (Phantom), camera to slow time, almost to a standstill while keeping some motion in frame.
