Hong Kong: City On Fire

This urgent film beds in with Hong Kong's pro-democracy demonstrations, offering a front line portrait of four young protesters through a year of struggle. We see their hopes for a freer life and feel their fears as the authorities crack down. Pulse-racing scenes bring the viewer to street level, where peaceful protest is met with fury and tear gas. Clear-eyed about the complications and contradictions that come with a movement that changed Hong Kong forever, it is a brave document of troubled times.

The feature-length film was showcased at cinemas throughout the UK.

Producers // Sinead Kirwan and Mark Lacey

Composer // Adrian Leung

Sound Mix // Patrick Collins

Cinematograhy Reel: Jonnie Lewis

A showreel of cinematography work by Jonnie Lewis, featuring a hand-picked selection of his personal and commercial projects from the past few years.

Around The Block

'Around the Block' is a passion project by Jonnie Lewis that focuses on American street artist David Zinn, famous for his heart-warming street drawings, composed of chalk, charcoal and found objects.

I began work on it through my own sense of creative frustration, with the loose idea being 'I want to go and make a film about a street artist'.

But when it came to editing it, it felt more apt for it to become an analogy for what it's like to be involved in the creative process that perhaps anyone in a creative industry can identify with.

Much like David finds inspiration in the cracks, streaks and specks on the pavement, I personally find that getting out and finding shots with a camera in my hand is far more fluid and inspiring than sitting at home and trying to come up with ideas.

The final piece is no longer a film specifically about street art, but a study of the process involved in making ideas come to life - told through a tour of David's world alongside the characters that live within it.

If nothing else, hopefully it encourages someone else to go out and create something just... because.

Etch

A girl hikes across remote moorland. On a hill in the distance, stands a lone building, which she discovers is a long abandoned school hall. A little sun penetrates the dirty glass. An upright piano sits in the far corner. She takes off her muddy boots and with confidence in her gait, strides across to the piano and pulls it by one corner. The rusted wheels are jammed and it pivots, creating an arc. A line is carved in layers of compacted dust and the ancient wooden floor splinters with the weight of the instrument.

In the centre of the room, hinged on one foot, she extends her leg and rotates swiftly and with graceful power. Her feet trace, etch and carve in circular movements, creating marks in the layers of dirt. Her body contorts. She throws herself in controlled but frenetic choreography. The movements increase in size and vigour as a pattern emerges. Finally she stands back to witness the impression her dance has etched on the floor.

Aerial Cinematography

There are seven CAA-licenced aerial cinematographers here at Bloc - but we’re more than just drone pilots. Motivated by a passion for how aerial footage can offer a completely different perspective and drama to any project, some of us have even won awards for our work. We regularly fly at home in Scotland and travel worldwide for projects further afield.

Ancient Scotland

John Duncan's most recent Scotland film, and the 3rd to gain a coveted Vimeo staff pick, was shot over 7 months at 21 stunning locations in Scotland. From as the far north as Muckle Flugga at the very top of Shetland to the prehistoric wonder of Britain’s highest sea stacks near St Kilda, some 40 miles west of the Outer Hebrides.

Loch Duart

‘Born and Raised’ is the first in a series of 4 films by Great Brink which focusses on the values upon which Loch Duart was founded. The film gives you a glimpse of the farm teams who live and work in the communities of the Outer Hebrides where we raise our world-renowned salmon.

This job had a small and nibble crew which allowed us to work quickly as well as having the ability to change plans last minute due to weather and operational changes with boats and such like out at the pens.

The title ‘Born and Raised’ refers to both the people who have lived and worked in the Outer Hebrides and Sutherland for generations and to Loch Duart’s unique lineage of salmon which can be traced back to the wild salmon which have been swimming in Scottish waters for millennia.

In the film Ruairidh Macleod, Assistant Site Manager at Loch Duart, explains just how intrinsically linked Loch Duart salmon is to the local community and to the environment in which he lives and works.

100 Places in Scotland

John Duncan's captivating aerial cinematography paints a majestic picture of Scotland, inviting viewers on an awe-inspiring journey through 100 stunning locations.

Wild Scotland

John Duncan's aerial film, 'Wild Scotland', beautifully captures the breathtaking wilds of this majestic country. From the Highlands and Islands on one coast to John O'Groats and North Berwick on another, viewers can enjoy just a glimpse of what makes Scotland so wonderfully unique.
